McGarry Forgivable Loan Program

Are you a Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology major in any one of the following departments?
- Animal Science and Agriculture Education
- Agricultural Business
- Food Science and Nutrition
- Industrial Technology
- Plant Science
- Viticulture and Enology
Are you using Financial Aid (FASFA) to help you pay for your college expenses?
Do you have unmet financial need to help you get through each semester?
If you answered yes to these three questions, then you may qualify for the McGarry Forgivable Student Loan Program.
How it works
Supplemental loans with zero percent interest - If you qualify, you may apply for a McGarry Student Loan. Based on unmet financial need, you can receive up to $7,500 per semester, $15,000 per school year up to $60,000 for your entire time at Fresno State. Loans have a zero percent interest rate and a due date of five (5) years after your expected graduation date.
Forgivable Loan - In addition, up to $2,500 per semester is forgivable if: 1) you enroll in COMS
101i (1 or 2 units) where you perform a service -learning project, and 2) you satisfactorily
complete the requirements of the service-learning project within the semester that
you received the loan.
COMS 101i is a Credit/No Credit asynchronous class. You can receive $1,250 of loan forgiveness for each completed credit, up to a maximum of $2,500 (2 credits), per semester.
How do you apply
To be considered for a Mary E. McGarry student loan, you must:
- Fill out and submit the online a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form (link)
- Fill out the Mary E. McGarry Student Loan application (link)
- Be enrolled in a minimum of twelve (12) units as an undergraduate student or eight (8) units of 200 series classes as a graduate student, before submitting your Mary E. McGarry loan application
*The deadline for completing the FAFSA form and submitting this application to the Financial Aid Office is June 30, 2023, for a loan for the 2023-2024 academic year. Spring semester applications are accepted on a case-by-case basis.
