Plant Science Club

Students can apply their knowledge from plant science classes by managing a community garden that donates produce to the campus student cupboard, hosting educational outreach events, participating in FFA state contests, and attending state and national conferences. The club offers peer engagement and hands-on practice experience to develop skills that strengthen their promising careers. The class also works with Central Valley professional organizations to provide professional development, networking opportunities, and tours of local industry locations. 

 

 

Soil Judging Team

Faculty Advisor Michael Sowers, michaelsowers@csufresno.edu

Students learn to identify, evaluate, classify, and describe soils in classes and in the field under the guidance of faculty member Michael Sowers, a soil scientist with over 30 years of experience. Students compete at regional and national contests to test their knowledge and soil science's vital role in sustainability. Under Sowers' guidance, the team has placed top-25 nationally in 2026 (14th), 2025 (16th), 2024 (24th), 2018 (15th), 2017 (20th), and 2016 (18th). Three Fresno State students have also placed top 20 at the same event - Mark Castanon (5th, 2018), Juan Magana (10th, 2025), and Will Dowling (18th). 

 

 

Horticulture Club

Students from across campus come together to learn the art and science of cultivating and propagating plants that are essential to food, medicine, aesthetics, recreation, and environmental conservation. The club is active in the community and organizes youth and community events, workshops, and plant sales. It also collaborates with the campus horticulture nursery and local partners, including United by Roots, Forestiere Underground Gardens, and others. The club emphasizes horticulture skill development, professional growth, and leadership experience. 

 

Irrigation Club

The club unites plant science and agriculture students and faculty with an interest in irrigation to provide opportunities for social, professional, and academic development and to promote community and sustainable aspects of agriculture. Outreach activities encourage students to pursue self-improvement, scholastic excellence, and civic responsibility.
