“Ag in a Bag” Opens World of Agriculture to Kids
The Fresno State Institute for Food and Agriculture (IFA) has created a new way to connect Jordan College agricultural education students with the next generation through its ‘Ag in a Bag’ product that was introduced at the Gibson Farm Market in May.
Youth ages 7 to 11 years can learn about livestock, plant, soil, dairy and water science topics through the tote bag packed with handouts, games, puzzles and drawing and coloring activities.
Also included in each bag are non-perishable food ingredients and recipes, science-related projects and other surprise items.
Free videos directly tied to each lesson and items in the bag are available via the Institute’s Youtube channel ( http://bit.ly/FS-ifa-youtube ), and a list of topics and links follow:
- The Water Cycle (Agriculture, Community & Environment / Groundwater Experiment
- How We Get Milk
- How to Make Ice Cream
- Plant Root & Shoot Structure
- Photosynthesis / How Plants Eat
- Dirt vs. Soil
- Plant Week Snack
- Earth as an Apple
- Soil Cups
- Dirt Storytime Book
- Soil Dissection
Families can pay $20 for each bag online at http://bit.ly/FS21-ag-in-a-bag and bring proof of payment to the Gibson Farm Market (or pay at the market).
“Ag in a Bag originated partly from the limits the pandemic placed on learning," said Dr. Susan Pheasant, director of the Institute for Food and Agriculture, "and it remains a great way to connect university and elementary students. Jordan College students have a deep passion for agriculture, and they love sharing that excitement - especially with youth who one day might become Fresno State students themselves.”
Community outreach is a key mission area for the Jordan College, IFA and 1,000-acre University Agricultural Laboratory (UAL).
Later this summer, agricultural education students will help host the annual campus Summer Kids Ag Camp (July 26-30, August 2-6). Youth from 1st to 4th grades will get fun, hands-on experience on the farm and learn about all phases of food production, handling, marketing and preparation.
IFA, the UAL and other Jordan College departments, centers and student organizations, will also be showcased this fall in a series of Food, Family & Farm community, industry and educational events that will be kicked off by the Gibson Farm Market Fall Festival on Saturday, October 16.
More information on this event and others are featured on the Jordan College events page.
