Jacob Wenger is an Associate Professor of Entomology and Chair of the Department of
Plant Science at California State University, Fresno. As an educator, mentor, and
scientist, He is passionate about helping students discover the importance of insects,
biotechnology, and sustainable agriculture while preparing them for successful careers
in a rapidly changing agricultural industry.
Dr. Wenger’s teaching emphasizes hands-on learning and connecting science to real-world
agricultural challenges. He teaches courses in Economic Entomology, Integrated Pest
Management, Agricultural Biotechnology, Apiculture and Honey Bee Biology, and Advanced
Plant Health.
Through these courses, students gain experience with insect biology, sustainable pest
management, molecular technologies, and the role of agriculture in addressing global
challenges. In recognition of his commitment to student learning, Dr.
Since he joined the department in 2015, his research program has focused on developing
innovative and sustainable solutions for California agriculture. His work combines
traditional entomology with modern tools such as genomics, CRISPR-based technologies,
remote sensing, and integrated pest management to address challenges facing orchard
and tree crops, including citrus, grapes, and tree nuts.
Students are actively involved in designing experiments, collecting and analyzing
data, presenting their findings at professional conferences, and publishing research.
Many of Dr. Wenger’s students have earned competitive research awards, scholarships,
and fellowships, and have continued on to careers in agricultural research and advanced
graduate programs.
Wenger received the Fresno State Jordan College Salgo-Noren Outstanding Teacher Award
in 2026, its top award, and the Entomological Society of America’s Early Career Professional
Excellence in Teaching Award in 2021.
