Michael Leishman’s journey from a high school dropout to an accomplished agriculture
educator with a master’s degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is a testament to the
transformative power of education and meaningful relationships. Inspired by an agriculture
teacher who gave him a sense of belonging, purpose, and confidence, Michael dedicated
nearly a decade to teaching at Highland High School, where he worked to provide students
with the same life-changing opportunities he once received. Through innovative initiatives
such as student home visits, a livestock breeding enterprise that removes financial
barriers for disadvantaged students, and the student-driven Scotsman’s Market, he
has created opportunities for young people to develop confidence, responsibility,
and real-world skills. Now serving as an agriculture professor at Porterville College
and a lecturer at Fresno State, Michael continues his mission of empowering students
through hands-on learning, mentorship, and meaningful connections. His philosophy
is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: education is not merely about delivering knowledge; it is about helping students recognize
their own potential, find where they belong, and discover what they are capable of
becoming.
