Mansi Pawar, Industrial Technology Graduate Student Spotlight

Mansi Pawar professional headshot(January 13, 2025) -- Fresno State Industrial Technology graduate student Mansi Pawar recently capped her graduate student requirements with an impressive research presentation about concrete testing and quality control methods.

That topic was central to her family’s involvement in the real estate and construction sectors, and also tied to an internship with Central California Concrete Supply Company (where she also developed additional technical, professional and communication skills).

The Panchkula, India native was drawn to Fresno State 2 1/2 years ago to pursue an IT degree, and has also been active on campus as a president of the International Student Association and treasurer of the Agriculture Systems and Technology Club.

Read more about her background and what’s ahead in this recent interview.

Q: Why did you choose to attend Fresno State, and how did you pick your major?

“As an international student from India, pursuing education in the United States felt like an unattainable dream until just 2 1/2 years ago. With no relatives in this country, I initially hesitated to take such a significant step. However, encouragement from a few friends who were studying here changed my perspective. They spoke highly of the opportunities at Fresno State, emphasizing the world-class education, state-of-the-art facilities, and affordable tuition. Also, Fresno State’s central location is also one of the reasons why I got attracted to coming here. It is only 4 hours away from Los Angeles, 3 hours from San Francisco, and 6 hours from San Diego, and so many more world famous places.”

“I earned my bachelor’s degree in science from Panjab University, India, but I felt the need to acquire more specialized technical skills. While researching graduate programs, I sought a field that offered not just expertise in one area but the flexibility to explore diverse career paths. An industrial technology degree stood out as the perfect fit—it’s an interdisciplinary program that serves as a gateway to various fields, including manufacturing, supply chain, management, quality control, information technology, artificial intelligence, and more. If you can name it, the Industrial Technology Department has it covered, making it an ideal choice to pursue my aspirations.”

Q: What do you consider your hometown and where are you a native of?

“I was born in Sonipat, a city in the Indian state of Haryana, and have been living in Panchkula, another city in Haryana, since 2004. I attended school in Chandigarh, the shared capital of Haryana and Punjab.  I moved to the United States of America in August 2022 to pursue a Master’s Degree in Industrial Technology."

Mansi and her cousin and fellow Fresno State student, Lakshay Pawar,.Q: Did you have any other family members graduate or attend Fresno State?

“After moving to Fresno State, I fell in love with everything about it. Inspired by my experience, I encouraged my cousin, Lakshay Pawar, to apply for his degree at Fresno State, and he was admitted to the Bachelor’s of Business Administration program in Spring 2024.”

Q: Which classes and faculty members have had the biggest influence on you while at Fresno State?

“The courses in Advanced Manufacturing Systems (IT 285) and Applications of Simulation (IT 284T) had a profound impact on me. They enhanced my understanding of efficient operations, sustainable sourcing, and their critical role in driving business success. Dr. Arun Nambiar played a pivotal role in my academic journey through his practical and application-focused teaching approach, which helped me bridge theoretical concepts with real-world scenarios. Additionally, Dr. Balaji Seth has consistently encouraged me to engage in activities beyond academics, pursue certifications, and develop skills that are essential for excelling in my career and securing meaningful employment.”

Q: Have you been involved with research on campus, and how will it benefit your career path?

“Yes, I have been involved in research focusing on concrete testing and quality control. My thesis work emphasizes analyzing shrinkage and strength properties of concrete, which is crucial for ensuring structural durability. This research is preparing me to address quality assurance challenges in my career.”

Q: Describe this and other research, and how it will benefit others?

“During my time at Fresno State, I have had the opportunity to work on diverse and impactful projects that have broadened my technical and managerial skills. One of my key projects was ‘A Data-Driven Approach to Quality Control in Concrete Testing,’ conducted as a case study at Vulcan Materials Company. This project emphasized the importance of precise testing and analytics in improving product quality and operational efficiency.”

“For my IT 223 (Management of New Technology) class, I initiated a small business called "Maggi Magic by Mansi," where I utilized ChatGPT to strategize, market, and generate a 50% profit margin. This innovative assignment honed my entrepreneurial mindset and highlighted the potential of AI tools in real-world business applications.”

“In another project focusing on shipping and logistics technology, I explored how advancements in technology can optimize supply chain operations, improve tracking systems, and enhance delivery efficiency.”

“Additionally, for the IT 219 (Applied Sensor Technology) class, I collaborated on the Automation of the Process of Making Flavored Liqueur. This project involved integrating sensors and automation techniques such as PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming to streamline production, ensuring consistency and quality while reducing manual intervention.”

“Each of these projects has equipped me with a deeper understanding of how technology can drive innovation across different industries and has prepared me to tackle complex challenges in my future career.”

Q: What was your background in agriculture before you started at Fresno State?

“Growing up in India, my exposure to agriculture was influenced by my family’s involvement in the real estate and construction sectors, which are deeply connected to rural communities. Although I do not have a direct agricultural background, my work in construction provided valuable insights into how infrastructure supports agricultural development. My family also owned a few farms, where I spent time as a child and developed a deep appreciation for the serene environment. These experiences ignited my aspiration to modernize farming practices through automation and innovative technologies.”

I also held the role of Treasurer for the Agriculture Systems and Technology Club (ASTC) for a brief period. These positions allowed me to build a vibrant community among students from diverse backgrounds and organize impactful events such as the International Coffee Hour, where I shared insights into Indian culture and traditions. Over the course of my leadership, I successfully organized more than 30 events, each with a significant number of attendees, significantly enhancing my leadership and event management skills. I also took the lead in organizing one of the largest Holi events on campus, celebrated Christmas and Halloween, and won the award for bringing the most engagement at the Culture Fest, a collaboration between the Study Abroad Club and ISA.”

Q: What’s your potential next career step, and do you have any other general career directions or options?

“I aspire to work in operations management, quality control, or supervisory positions within the manufacturing or construction industries. My ideal role would allow me to utilize my technical expertise, engage with people, and drive efficiency and sustainability in industrial processes while making a meaningful impact.”

Q: Have you overcome any challenges to get where you are today that have shaped who you are?

“Moving to the U.S. as an international student presented its own set of challenges, from adjusting to a new culture to managing academics alongside financial responsibilities. These experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the value of hard work, shaping me into a more determined and resourceful individual.”

Q: Are there any other interesting notes about yourself that you would like to include?

“I enjoy volunteering and sharing my culture with others. I traveled to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, Arizona, Monterey Bay, etc. while I was a student at Fresno State. I discovered a passion for cooking, especially for others, and I also enjoy dancing and singing. I joined Latin dance sessions offered by the Latin Dance Club at Fresno State, which were a delightful way to connect with others and explore new cultures. Through this journey, I’ve made many friends and become a more extroverted, confident person.
