David Sedlak Water 4.0 author presentation

Campus water initiative to feature Water 4.0 author David Sedlak

April 9, 2018 – The Interdisciplinary Water Cohort at Fresno State and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will host author Dr. David Sedlak, who will speak at a public forum at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 12 at the North Gym room 118 on campus.

The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be available to the first 100 students.

Sedlak will sign copies of his book, Water 4.0, which will also be available for sale and is part of a campus-sponsored semester-long reading initiative for students, faculty and staff.

In the book, he describes the importance of making informed decisions about managing and updating urban water systems by understanding three major revolutions and technologies that have occurred over the past 2,500 years.

Sedlak is a professor and director of the Institute for Environmental Science and Engineering at UC Berkeley and co-director of the Berkeley Water Center. He received the 2014 National Water Research Institute Clarke Prize and is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

He also serves as an editor-in-chief of Environmental Science & Technology scientific journal and is a former committee member of federal, state and National Resource Council drinking water and water reuse boards.

“We’re excited to host this event to learn how our community water systems continue to evolve, especially here in the Central Valley where sustainable water management is a topic that affects us all,” said Dr. Fredrick Peinado Nelson, chairperson of the liberal studies department and campus water cohort member. “Based on our campus book club discussions, we expect a lot of great questions for Dr. Sedlak to better understand the concepts behind what we see in our sinks and drains every day that reflect centuries of creative engineering.”

The book was integrated this spring into classes in most of Fresno State’s eight colleges and schools, and is part of an annual campus read program that began in 2015 to develop better awareness about water issues.
