Nutrition & dietetics students educate public through grocery tours

(March 4, 2017 ) -- Fresno State nutrition and dietetic students will host more than 50 Bulldogs in the Grocery Store tours for campus students and the community from March through May at local Save Mart supermarkets.

The free, one-hour sessions teach the importance of fruits and vegetables to provide essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients, and to encourage healthy immune systems. The tours are also part of the students’ senior projects.

The five-person tours are offered different days and include free educational materials, coupons, budgeting tips and food samples.

Dr. Lisa Herzig, a Fresno State associate professor and dietetics and food administration program director, coordinates the program that was initially funded by a $5,000 grant from the Produce for Better Health Foundation.

“A key part of our food science and nutrition programs is giving students up-close experience working with the community, so this new program is a great addition,” Herzig said. “Being able to physically show fruit and vegetables up close in the store better reinforces our message that all types – fresh, frozen, canned and dried – are easy to incorporate into our diets and improve our nutrition and overall health.”
