Jordan College welcomes record fall enrollment
(November 8, 2015) -- The student excitement behind the Jordan College of Agricultural Science and Technology is confirmed thanks to its record-setting enrollment numbers this fall.
The Jordan College’s 2015 fall enrollment of 2,516 is more than double the same total from records available that date back the fall of 2002 (1,147). That total is a 119 percent increase over that 14-year period and the best on campus compared to the six colleges that also showed improvements – Science and Mathematics (96%), Health & Human Services (72%), Social Sciences (58%), Craig School of Business (16%) and Lyles College of Engineering (13%).
Among the seven Jordan College departments this fall, six welcomed all-time high enrollments – Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education (654), Child Family and Consumer Sciences (513), Agricultural Business (449), Food Science and Nutrition (331), Plant Sciences (247) and Industrial Technology (164).
The other department – Viticulture and Enology – had 158 students enrolled and was one shy of its highest total from the fall of 2014 (159).
Among the 25 Jordan College degrees offered, the most popular were agricultural business (449), child development (379), animal science (240), dietetics and food administration (214), industrial technology (163), animal science (153), plant health (150) and agricultural education (109).
The college’s overall total of 2,516 students was composed of 1,975 returning students, 291 freshmen, 234 new transfers and 16 new master’s students. Among those Jordan College transfers, the five leading schools of origin were Fresno City College (189), Reedley College (177), College of the Sequoias (107), Modesto Junior College (75) and Merced Community College (49).
The Jordan College’s percentage of international students in its college (3.5 percent, 88 overall) – ranked second-best on campus just behind the Craig School of Business (3.9 percent, 121). The Jordan College attracted students from 37 countries with the largest contingents from included India (334), Japan (109), China (89), Indonesia (49), Saudia Arabia (37), Malaysia (28), Taiwan (20), Mexico (18), Canada (13), Brazil (12) and Greece (11).
Overall, campus enrollment this fall is 24,136 - the highest in the last 14 years and third straight year over 23,000. That total included 3,840 first-generation new students – 71 percent of its total of 5,414 newcomers. The Jordan College ranked fourth–largest behind Health and Human Services (4,838), Business (3,138), Social Sciences (2,712), and ahead of Arts and Humanities (2,128), Engineering (1,706) and Undeclared (1,268).
