Quarter Horse Unit

The Fresno State Quarter Horse Unit offers a hands-on learning environment for both students seeking to expand their knowledge of equine science and management.

The Unit serves as a primary teaching facility for a variety of Animal Science courses including Horse Production, Advanced Horse Management, Stable Management, Equine Reproduction, Equine Nutrition, and Colt Training as well as internships. Students benefit from applied instruction that integrates classroom concepts with real-world experience in horse care, training, and facility operations.

In addition to its instructional role, the Quarter Horse Unit operates as a working breeding and training enterprise. This professional setting allows students to gain direct exposure to industry-standard practices in horse development, performance preparation, and herd management.

The Quarter Horse Unit offers a comprehensive, hands-on educational experience designed to prepare students for successful careers in the equine industry. Coursework includes breeding and selection principles, equine nutrition and research investigations, health and disease management, general horse handling, and colt training techniques.

Beyond the classroom, students actively participate in breeding operations, colt development, and daily horse care—building confidence and practical skills through real-world experience. Opportunities such as internships, research projects, field days, judging contests, and horse shows further enrich their understanding of the industry.

The Quarter Horse Unit fosters both technical knowledge and a genuine passion for producing exceptional horses. Many of our graduates move directly into full-time careers within the equine industry, carrying forward the tradition of excellence they developed here.
