Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education

Marisa Hicks
Student Teacher
Area of Emphasis: Plant Science
Fall 2025 Final Student Teaching Placement: Modesto High School
Marisa Hicks’ passion for agriculture is rooted in a lifetime of hands-on experience. Growing up working in her family’s orchards and vineyards and raising a hobby chicken flock, she developed a deep appreciation for the dedication and resilience the industry requires. She earned her A.S. in Animal Science from Modesto Junior College before transferring to Fresno State, where she completed her B.S. in Agricultural Education with an emphasis in Plant Science. Influenced by professors who demonstrated genuine passion for their subjects, Marisa realized her true calling was to share her knowledge and advocate for agriculture with the next generation.
Her student teaching experience spans multiple pathways and grade levels. At Central High, she taught 8th grade Animal Science and 11th grade Food Science, while coaching livestock judging and vine pruning teams. At Modesto High, she taught Horticulture, Agricultural Mechanics, Agriscience, Biology, and Agricultural Systems, and coached Opening and Closing Ceremonies teams. Throughout both placements, she actively incorporated FFA into the classroom through projects, leadership opportunities, and hands-on activities.
With a background in both plant and animal sciences, Marisa focuses on fostering curiosity, leadership, and practical skills in her students. After completing her final semester of student teaching, she plans to continue building programs that prepare students for success in agriculture and beyond, while honoring the deep agricultural traditions that shaped her upbringing.
