Jack and Ann Chappell Memorial Scholarship

Jack Richard Chappell was born January 9, 1930, in Fresno at the old Sample Sanitarium, to Fresno pioneers Walter Lee Chappell and Belle Chambers Chappell. He passed away in Fresno after a short illness on March 19, 2015.  He was a 1953 graduate of Fresno State College and received his vocational education credential from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He taught vocational agriculture at Fowler High School and was an adjunct professor of ag education at CSU, Fresno, and Cal Poly. In addition to teaching, he was a vineyard farmer all his adult life and a board member of the Fresno County Farm Bureau. Jack was a regional and statewide officer of the California Ag Teachers Association.

Jack was instrumental in the development of the current statewide standards for ag education, largely based on his teaching model. These were incorporated into the 1983 California Omnibus Education Bill SB813, which, to date, has resulted in over $ 100 million in funding for agricultural education at the secondary level. For his contributions to vocational agriculture, he was awarded the American Farmer degree by the Future Farmers of America. In 2003, he was honored as a teacher of excellence and inducted into the ag teacher hall of fame by Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Jack’s family has endowed a memorial scholarship to provide support for a student who wishes to pursue a career in agricultural education. Preference will be given to students from Fowler High School.
