Naming of the Fresno State Dairy Production Unit in Memory of Manuel “JR.” and Katye Mancebo
The late Manuel Mancebo Jr. and his wife Katye from Tulare will forever be connected to the dairy science program at Fresno State. Manuel Jr. was a leader in the California and western states milk hauling industry. He was owner of Kings County Truck Lines based in Tulare. On April 25, in honor of a gift of $1 million from their estate, President Castro officially named the dairy production unit for the Mancebos. Over 100 family, friends, faculty, students and staff came to honor the family and witness the dedication. We were honored to be able to celebrate the life and generosity of the Mancebo family.
Jensen Scholarship: Donors and Student Recipients Meet
On April 24, Rodger Jensen and his son Doug visited campus to meet the recipients of their family scholarship. Rodger and his late wife Margaret grew a fondness for education and how it impacted their lives and careers. The generous Jensen Scholarship covers tuition and other fees for students. This year’s Jensen Scholars are Emily Baker, Agricultural Business; Allison Faure, Agricultural Business; Darryl Hadlich, Agricultural Business; Jace McClure, Agricultural Business; Pierce Hanning, Plant Science; Giovanni Marquez Campos, Plant Science; Ignacio Mendozo, Plant Science; and Emma Miller, Plant Science. Thank you again to the Jensen family for continuing to support our students.
Moller family’s Pledge to Agricultural Mechanics Lab Continues to Benefit Students
In February of 2017, Dr. James (Jim) Moller of Minneapolis along with his wife, Carol, pledged $250,000 to support agricultural mechanics in the Jordan College and to honor his father, Leonard, who had a passion for agriculture and equipment mechanics. Recently, the college received the third installment of the gift, and plans to use it for additional equipment. The state-of-the-art lab will soon boast a new tig welder, a CNC laser engraver/cutter, forklift, press brake attachment for iron worker, a tubing roller, a stomp shear, 24-auto darkening welding helmets, tools and supplies for the power machinery lab and welding skills shop plus an additional drill press.
Through their generosity, Jim and Carol have been able to make a great impact on students by helping to upgrade the equipment and laboratory in their learning environment. We thank the Mollers for continuing to enhance our students' experiences.
In Memory of Beverly Knobloch
On April 4, the Jordan College lost a dear friend, Beverly Knobloch. Beverly graduated from Fresno State with her master’s degree and continued on to do graduate work in administration at Stanford University and San Diego State. Beyond her education, she was a teacher, counselor and vice principal within the Fresno Unified School District for over 35 years. Beverly was the daughter of Rue and Gwen Gibson, and with her sister, funded the building of the Fresno State Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market, named in their parents’ memory. In addition, Beverly and her husband, Earl Knobloch, supported and funded the creation of the Robotics Laboratory in the Jordan Agricultural Research Center. Her contributions to our community are too great to list. She will be deeply missed.
Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute Upcoming Events
On April 25, the recently established Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute held their third lecture regarding the Carnation Revolution presented by Portuguese poet and writer Alamo Oliveira from the Azores. Additionally, they are looking forward to hosting a Portuguese-inspired dinner on May 1 prepared by Azorean chef Paulo Rocha as well as culinology students from the Food Science and Nutrition Department in the Jordan College which will be held at the Fresno State Winery. Agricultural Business Banquet
Fresno State’s Annual Spring Agricultural Business Banquet will be held on Wednesday, May 1st at San Joaquin River Parkway. The proceeds of the event benefit the Agricultural Business Club as well as the Fresno Chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association. The department will also be recognizing and honoring the graduating seniors majoring in Agricultural Business for 2019. Fresno State AGR Member Selected to Join National Collegiate Advisory Board
Fresno State Alpha Gamma Rho Chapter member, Luis Mendoza, recently received a position on the organization’s National Collegiate Advisory Board to serve as an at large member. Mendoza is an agricultural business major minoring in plant science and is currently on the Jordan College student task force as well as preparing for a summer internship with Syngenta. In his new position, he will have the opportunity to work alongside leaders within the organization to review and discuss issues and trends on a national level. Congratulations, Luis!

The Industrial Technology Department at Fresno State held their 32nd annual Spring Banquet and Career Fair on April 9. The highlight of the event was recognizing Noe Toribio, a Fresno State industrial technology major, as the student to receive the 2019-20 Industrial Technology Advisory Board Scholarship. Thank you to all who supported industrial technology in the Jordan College through this event, and congratulations, Noe!

On April 13, FFA Field Day was hosted at the Jordan College's University Agricultural Laboratory. Fresno State hosts three field days throughout the year consisting of 26 contests and it has allowed over 2,000 students to apply knowledge and skills they have obtained in the classroom to the agricultural industry. The largest contests are Floriculture and Livestock Judging.
The Fresno State FFA Field Day Committee is made up of Fresno State students, and they are honored to put on such events for the California Association of Future Farmers. With 18 state finals that are hosted here at Fresno State, we are excited about the potential growth in the coming years for FFA members that will continue to impact California agriculture.
